JUBILEE OF THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND.

The Lord Bishop of Wellington has written to his clergy with regard to the observahce of the Jubilee of the Church of England in this colony. The jubilee dates from the signing of the constitution of the church at Taurarua, on June 13th, 1857. The existence of the church may be dated from the visit of the Rev. Samuel Marsden, in 1814. The first Christian service ever held in New Zealand was that at which Mr Marsden officiated on Christmas Day, 1814. This has just been commemorated by the erection of a stone cross at Rangihoua—the scene of service. In 1841 George: Augustus Selwyn was consecrated in England, and sent,to the colony as, the first bishop of New Zealand. The signing of the constitution is an event of supreme importance, and is the date of the beginning of the Church of England with , full spiritual functions. ; The Primate, Dr Neville, of Dunedin, has issued special prayers for June 13th, and each bishop has notified his clergy to observe this day in his parish as a day of thanksgiving. There will be special services as directed in All Saints’ Church on June 13th, and also on Sunday, June 16th. The collection taken at all the services will be given to the provincial thanksoffering to be offerred by the Primate in St Paul’s Cathedral, Loudon, on the occasion of the Pan-Anglican Congress of next year.
