In speaking to the motion Cr Baker said that the payment of £55 was preposterous. Cr Austin said that Cr Baker, was right and he would not assent to the tender being accepted. After considerable discussion of the tenders for kerbing it was moved by Cr Baker and seconded by Cr Coley That no tenders be accepted for concrete kerbing and that thematter be referred to Works Committee.—Carried. A letter was read from the Manawatu County Council re the Whirokino bridge. J. E. Fulton, engineer, Wellington, had reported on the bridge and damage done, and had • ascertained that the probable cost of repairs would be to £joo. It was proposed to carry out the work under section 118 of “ The Public Works Act, 1905,” and the Borough Council was asked to pass a resolution agreeing to the Manawatu County Council carrying out the work as suggested by Mr Fulton and that the passing of a resolution would be treated as an urgent matter. In answer to a question the Mayor said that the Boro’ was liable for one-third of cost. Cr Baker moved and Cr Stiles seconded, That the Council visit the Whirokino bridge on Monday, 29th inst.,at 2.30 p.m.—Carried,

A letter was received from Mr Moore in reply to request from Council asking Mr Jupp to remove trees in Thynne street, and on behalf of his client offering to meet Council as reasonably as possible. The cost of removing trees was 30s each, and this meant a total cost of £lO 10s. Mr Jupp was willing to pay half of this amount if Council would pay its share, and on condition that Council allowed him to dispose of timber. As he did not admit any liability on his part considered this a reasonable offer.—On the motion of Cr Baker, seconded by Cr Coley, it was decided that Mr Jupp be requested to remove trees as notified by Public Works Committee. From same, on behalf of Mr A. Reeve, in reference to injury received by his , client in falling through the bridge over the drain in Johnston street and leading from Johnston St east and what was formerly a continuation of Gray street, beipg the portion of the street between sections 554 and 556. Mr Reeve on Tuesday last was going home after dark, and that owing to the decking having

been removed (which could not be seen in the dark) he had fallen through and struck his head against the stringers, being stunned. If a passer-by had not rescued him he would have otherwise been drowned. Besides personal injury his clothes were damaged. A request was made for compensation.—Matter left over until next meeting.
