Won by Mr Okey. Particulars of the Polling. Split in the Liberal Vote. New Plymouth,.May 14. Polling took place to-day for the return of a member of the House of Represeetatives to fill the vacancy caused by the death 01 Mr E. M. Smith. The result of the voting is that Mr H. Okey , an Oppositionist, has been elected, defeating Mr E. Dockrill, Government candidate, by a majority ot 364, and Mr W. G. Malone, Independant Liberal, by 981. Details of the votes cast for each candidate are as follows : Mr Okey ... J 9 Mr Dockrill ... 1627 Mr Malone ... ••• 1010 There were 6205 names on the voters’ roll; thus 1577 votes were not recorded. All the candidates addressed the multitude, also Mr Carroll and Mr Massey. The latter was denied a hearing until after Mr Carroll had spoken. Mr Carroll, in his remarks, congratulated the winning candidate, whose success he attributed to superior organisation and an unfortunate split in the Liberal vote, He claimed a large majority and would have won on a straight-out go at a general election. Mr Massey accepted the challenge if the issue was made Freehold versus Leasehold.
