CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
The Council of the local Chamber of Commerce transacted a large amount of business last night in a short space of time. The Council dealt with the vital question of river bank protection. It is apparent that something must be done immediately in this direction by the Marine Department to protect the washing, away of valuable land and to preserve a channel for navigation purposes. More attention should be given to the river, from the Heads to the wharf, by'the Department responsible. It is hoped that the recent agitation by the Borough Council and Chamber of Commerce to be followed by the deputation which is to wait upon the Minister, will result in something, practical being accomplished. Messrs Rimmer and Dr Mandl are to be commended for their action in urging the necessity for telephone communication between Foxton, Moutoa and Shannon, and a numerously signed petition from residents in the district will back up the the Chamber’s application to the Postal Department in this respect. The tramway to the Heads and planting at the Beach was not lost sight of. With reference to the latter, Mr Hennessy's suggestion that rssidents devote Arbor Day to tree planting at our seaside resort is one that we hope to see, carried out. The new Council of the Chamber is giving evidence of great vitality and much good to the town should follow as a result of their labours.
