Auckland, May 5. The steady growth of the flax industry in Auckland district is shown by the fact that during April. 1907, the hemp graded at this port totalled 6290 bales, or 1005 tons, of a total value of £27,000. This is an increase upon the output for March of 733 bales, or 129 tons. As compared with the quantity of hemp dealt with for April, 1906, the output last month shows an increase of 2166 bales, or 314 tons, being the second largest since grading started. InverCarGile, May 4. At the Police Court, A. M. Lenihan, a railway fireman, was fined £5 for using indecent language to Walter Pearce, enginedriver, and committed for trial for sending a threatening letter to him. Pearce had had occasion to report Lenihan for neglect of duty, which caused the arrival of a train at Winton to be delayed thirteen minutes.
