CABLE BRIEFS.
London, May 4. The Premiers attended a review of sixty modern warships, representing the Home fleet, at Portsmouth and Spithead. The review included a realistic attack on, and partial occupation of, Whale Island, the enemy being finally expelled. At the outset the Premiers were aboard ' H.M.S. Dreadnought, watching a mimic attack upon her by torpedo boats and submarines, when they saw the torpedo boat destroyer Coquette, in a heavy wash of the sea, crash into a coal hulk crowded with sight-seers. The Coquette’s bows were damaged, and she has been docked for repairs. Paris, May 3. King Edward held a forty-five minutes’ conversation with President Fallieres at the Elysee. Calcutta, May 3. Serious rioting has occurred at Rawal-Pindi, in the Punjab. The mob burned motor-cars and pillaged a mission church and contractors’ stores, Armed police dispersed the rioters. A squadron of the Tenth Hussars is patrolling the town. Melbourne, May 4th. A couple of years ago Mrs Roderick Knipe, of Melbourne, brought an action in the English Chancery Court against her husband, from whom she was separated, for the custody of her nine-year-old daughter, Muriel Doris Knipe, who is heiress to a large fortune. The suit was granted, but the child had disappeared. Mrs Knipe traced her husband and the child to Melbourne, and after a time carried her daughter off to England. The child was, however, kidnapped, and the mother was unable to find any clue to her whereabouts. It is now stated that Mr Knipe is on his way from Vancouver to Melbourne, with the child.
