London, May 1. King Edward has’ left on his homeward journey, via Paris. Paris, May 1. Owing to May Day demonstrations, very special precautions are being taken for King Edward’s protection in Paris. London, M s.y 1. At the dinner which King Edward is to give to the Premiers and statesmen at Buckingham Palace on May Slh, ladies are not included, as the Queen and Princess Victoria will be absent visiting Athens. In the House of Commons the Small Holdings (Scotland) Bill, which was opposed by a number of Scottish Liberals, was read a second time. Mr Balfour, leader of the Opposition, charged the Government with taking land and capital sunk in it, and speculating with it, leaving the loss to be borne by the owner. It was apparently intended to extend the Bill to England. The Times’ Johannesburg correspondent says that the Colonial Secretary (Mr Smuts) is earnestly attempting to understand the difficulties of the mining industry, but the Imperial Government is still pressing the Transvaal to procure the immediate repatriation of the Chinese. Pretoria, May 1. The Directors of the Kleinfontein Deep and Van Ryn Deep gold mines, on the Rand, have decided to close down. Their funds are nearly exhausted, and they are unable at present to raise the large sums required to develop the mines. Guatemala, May 1. A bomb exploded near the carriage of the President of Guatemala (Manuel E. Cabrera). General Orellana and the coachman were injured. St. Petersburg, May 1. There is a general strike in Warsaw, the capital city of Poland, which has a population of about six hundred and twenty thousand. Trade is stopped. Bread and meat are unpurchasable. The Duma adopted the Government’s Recruits Bill by 193 votes to 129.
