FOXTON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
—i ♦ A meeting of the Council of the above was held prior to the annual meeting, in the Council Chambers on Thursday evening- Present; Messrs P. Hennessy (President), Morgan, Perreau, Rimmer, and Rae-Howard (Secretary). Apologies for absence were received trom Messrs Frankland and Moore.
The minutes of the previous meet-
ing were read and confirmed. - A letter was read from Mr John Stevens, M.H.R., re tree planting at the sanatorium. It was decided to inform Mr Stevens that over 20005, persons from all parts of the distrfct'visited the beach during the summer months. A letter was read from the Secretary of the Palmerston Chamber of Commerce, explaining why the proposed visit had been postponed. A report was received from the Inspector of Nuisances re drains emptying into the river at the wharf. The annual meeting was then held, when the following members were present, in addition to the Council: —Messrs Ross senr. Bullard, Starck, Healey, Dr Mandl, L.W. Wilson, Hornblow, M. Walker, Hopper and Clemett. The minutes of the last quarterly meeting were read and confirmed. The President gave a resume of the work done by the Chamber during the year, touching upon the Harbour Board question, flax cultivation, and tree planting at the beach. He regretted his inability to again offer himself for the presidency, but suggested a successor in the person of Mr G. W. Morgan. He thanked the Council for the support and courtesy accorded him during his term of office. The annual report dealt with representations made to the Postal Department re erection of postal boxes at the intersections of Robinson and Duncan and Johnson and Union Streets, which had been carried out by the Department. The Marine Department had been communicated with in reference to sand drifting into the river, and as a result the Department had sent along a party of surveyors who are making an extensive survey of the river, the report of which will be received in v due time. The request that assistance be given to Pilot Hall had also been acceded to. The Railway Department had been approached re further extension to the wharf, and the Chamber had been informed that this important matter would be included in the estimate of works to be considered during the next session, and the promise of a grant of £2OO had been obtained from the Land Board for tree planting at the Sanatorium. The report concluded by stating that the year commenced with a debit of ss, and closed with a credit balance of £6 is. The report was adopted as read. The election of officers resulted as follows : President —Mr G. W. Morgan ; Vice-President —Mr P. Hennessy ; Council —Dr Mandl, Messrs Thos. Rimmer, Ross (sen), M. Perreau, Frankland, and M. Walker ; auditors —Messrs L. W. Wilson and Bullard. A lengthy discussion ensued in reference to better train service between Palmerston and Foxton, and it was resolved that the Counytil approach the Department with S a request that extra trains be run between Palmerston and Foxton. Messrs Hennessy and Ross spoke on the subject of flax cultivation and the fibre industry. Mr Hornblow said the town was endowed with several hundred acres of land. He suggested that the Council approach the Borough Council with a view of ascertaining whether a portion of this land could be put under flax cultivation for revenue purposes. The Secretary was voted a bonus of two guineas, and the outgoing officers and council were accorded a vote of thanks. It was decided to ask the pilot at the Heads to try and find out who had started the fire in the lupins, which had destroyed some of the trees planted, and to report the matter to the Marine Department. After further matters, of a minor
character had been discussed, and , the new President had returned | thanks, the meeting rose.
