THE FLOODS.

Woodvilee, May 2. Rain has been falling steadily for the last thirty hours, and as a result all the rivers in the district are in very high flood. The flood in the Manawatu river has almost reached a record level, while all the low-lying country round Woodville is under water. No damage has been reported. There has been no interruption of the train service. Pahiatua, May 2. The rain has caused slips in various parts of the district. Owing to the big slips on the Pahiatua side of the Makuri Gorge communication is blocked to vehicular traffic. The Mangatainoka river is running bank high, and the protective works in the vicinity of the Pahiatua borough bridge is completely submerged. Masterton, May 2. Nearly six inches of rain has fallen in Masterton during the past two days. The floods still continue and the mail coaches are still unable to reach Masterton. The mailman was capsized with the coach in the middle of the creek at Flat Point yesterday afternoon. The driver and the three male passengers had to swim for their lives. The Flat Point mail-bag was lost. The horses were got safely ashore, and the coach arrived at Masterton five hours late. Carterton, May 2. The continuous rain of the past two days resulted in the heaviest flood experienced in the Wairarapa since 1892. The Maungatarere and Kaipatangata streams flooded the Dalefield district, where three small bridges were carried away. At Blackbridge the Waiohine has flooded the Maori pa, and land on the Western side of the northern portion of Carterton borough was flooded. The Ruamahanga overflowed its banks at Gladstone, where flood waters are high. The telephone line is also down, and Gladstone is cut off from all communication. The floods are very bad down the Eower Valley. A telephone message from Kahautara states that country is a sea of water, the inundation being the worst sines 1895Traffic between Featherston and Martinborough has been interrupted. The protective works in Waingawa and Waiohine rivers are holding splendidly.
