ATTEMPT ON THE LIFE OF A POLICE COMMISSIONER.
Perth, April 24. A sensational attempt was made to shoot Captain Hare, Commissioner of Police. He was sitting in his office reading a report, when ex-corporal Tyler rushed in. Exclaiming “ I’ve got you this time,” he fired a revolver at the Commissioner point blank. The bullet passed through the paper in Hare’s hand and lodged in the wall. Hare grappled Tyler, who again fired. The bullet struck Hare’s shirt front, which being heavily starched, caused the missle to glance off. It then struck him in the shoulder, but did not penetrate. Assistance arrived, and the maddened assailant was over-powered. Tyler resigned from the police two years ago, as a protest against being fined on a charge of insubordination. He has since nursed his grievance and has been continuously trying to get the case reopened.
