The Manawatu Herald. TUESDAY, APRIL 23, 1907.

Owing to pressure on our space, a considerable amount of interesting ready matter is unavoidably held out of this issue. Rain commenced to fall this morning. It is sincerely hoped it will hold off in order to allow country visitors to visit Foxton tomorrow to hear the world-famous Besses O’ Th’ Barn Band. Great interest is being taken in the Municipal election to be held to-morrow. The polling booth will be open between the hours of 9 a.m and 7 p.m. Messrs Dalrymple and Wilson publicly notify that any person or persons found trespassing with dog or gun on Sandy Run, Kaikokopu or Hunias Lakes will be prosecuted and further that the Natives have nothing to do with these lakes. We have been asked to announce the fact that Mr Bradcock, a candidate for municipal honours, was responsible for fencing the road to Whirokino bridge when he was on the Council some years ago. This fence has been of great service to people using the road during flood time. Messrs Rae-Hovvard and Co. advertise for sale a wood and coal yard as a going concern. The reason for selling is that the owner is leaving the district to take up farming, and as this yard is situated in the centre of the town it could be worked up into a splendid business. Full particulars can be had by calling at the offices of the above. Rugby football has been a... paying game of late years, according to the balance-sheet of the New Zealand Rugby Union for the year ended 31st March. ' The balance-sheet shows that the union has a credit of 19s 1 id. The sum of /3450 has been advanced to local unions by way of loans,, and an amount of is on fixed deposit. At the North v. .South Island .watch, played in Wellington last year, the takings were 13s 6d, and the net profit worked out at 3s xod. Interest earned on loans and .de-| posits amounted to 12s pd. [ The balance to the credit of the profit and loss account for the 12 months’ working is 3s id.

To-day, being St. George’s Day, the banks throughout New Zealand observe a holiday. Mr George Coley’s traction engine will drive the dynamo at the “Faust” production at the Public Hall, to-morrow night. The Daily Mail’s Johannesburg correspondent reports that the Queen of Swaziland is prepared to cede to the Transvaal one-third of her country comprising an area of high mineral worth, for a subsidy of per annum. Mr. R. H. W. Bligh, who toured New Zealand last year, has returned from Sydney with the intention of taking up his residence. This decision is due to the endorsement given to his work. He will spend some weeks in a country home at Clarence Bridge before entering upon another lecturing tour.

The pictures for the Faust Opera Company at the Public Hall to-morrow night, will be projected by a 12,000 candle power electric arc lamp. It is unusual for a company of this high order to visit Foxton, and the opportunity of seeing an up-to-date biograph exhibition should not be missed. u The New Zealand Rugby Union has been approached by the New South Wales Union with a view to having the coming tour of the New Zealand team extended so as to permit of a match being played at Melbourne. The New Zealand body has replied suggesting that arrangements might be made for the match to be played within the dates already agreed upon.

A dentist with a sense of humour is a great solace in the hour of affliction. One youthful operator had just hauled out some back teeth tor a charming patient, when he began to smile, and finally laughed outright. The lady was not laughing—indeed, she felt hurt in more ways than one. and said so. When the operator is young, good looking and supposed to be sympathetic, the fair one, with her -head “in chancery,” is more hurt by the laugh than the forceps. The dentist expressed contrition, “ couldn’t help laughing,” he said. “ Listen to the street band outside.” The lady listened, and was mollified, for the band, with a nice sense of the fitness of things, was playing “ In Happy Moments.” Mr Jarrett visited the Foxton public school, in company with the Chairman of the School Committee, on Thursday afternoon, and addressed the boys and girls of the upper standards in the quadrangle on the value of fresh air and breathing exercises. He expressed satisfaction with the answers given to various questions .in regard to the law of health, the action of breathing on the lungs, etc., and expresses the opinion that the teachers have well grounded their pupils in the hygenic laws. After the address Mr Jarrett instructed the teachers and children in the various exercises, which were very enthusiastically entered into by the latter. At the conclusion he was thanked by the Chairman (Mr Clemett) and Headmaster (Mr Adams) for his generous assistance, and has promised to visit the school again at an early date. Under the new flax-grading regulations a penalty not exceeding £25 is incurred for neglect of the correct dimensions of a bale and the provision for enabling the brand to be seen and the grade-mark to be affixed. The maximum points are 100 —20 each for stripping, washing, scutching, colour, and strength. The following are the standards on which the grades will be determined : —A grade (superior), 91 to 100 points, both inclusive; B grade (fine), 81 to 90 points, both inclusive; C grade (good fair), 71 to 80 points, both inclusive ; D grade (fair), 61 to 70 points, both inclusive; E grade (common), 51 to 60 points, both inclusive. Then follows this important clause : —“ Any bale of phormium fibre awarded less than 51 points will be condemned by the grader, and no such certificate as hereafter mentioned shall be issued by the grader in respect thereof, provided, however, that any such condemned fibre may, after it has been redressed or baled, be resubmitted for grading, and if it is then allotted not less than 51 points by a grader a certificate may be issued in respect thereof. ’ ’

On Thursday afternoon last a party of Wellington business men were interested in the first trial of an engine invented by Mr. Peter Ellis, of the Harbour Board’s staff, which is thought to have great possibilities. The new engine, which is of four horse-power, was constructed by Mr. Ernest Manthel. of Messrs. Andrevys and, Manthel, under the direct superr vision of the inventor, an<i 'the trial was conducted in the workshop of Messrs, Euke and Sons. The principal of the,Ellis engine is entirely novel, differing from both the reciprocijiing engine and the Parsons turpine. It is a rotary engine with ' a positive pressure drive, having the striking peculiarity of its/case revolving together with the motor, which alone makes it. a thing apart from all other rotary engines. The case, like that of a watch, explains nothing, all the works being hidden. The case of the motor, forms its fly-wheel and, running in the same direction - as the internal mechanism, is easily reversible, and, it is said, reduces the friction ,to a minimum. It is claimed thait the advantage of Mr. Ellis’s inversion over the turbine is that the Wellington patent reverses without having a second engine for this special/ purpose. Mr Ellis is peing supported in his experiments by # locailv-formed company.— Post. I
