A MOTHER’S NEGLECT.

Death of an infant. Christchurch, April 18. An inquest was held at the hospital to-night on the body of an infant named Kdith Mabel Halyard, who had died in the morning. It was stated in evidence that the mother of the child tyad been on a drinking bout from April ist to loth, and the death of the child had resulted from neglect during that period. A verdict was returned, in accordance with the medical evidence, that death was due to exhaustion, following on maramus, and the jury added a rider that in their opinion the police should make every effort to obtain information as to the places where the mother, who was a prohibited person, obtained liquor. It is understood that the mother will be charged with manslaughter at the Magistrate's Court tomorrow.
