AN EMPEROR’S BOND.
The ex-Empress Eugenie, widow of the Emperor Napoleon 111. of France, is being sued for ,£184,000 lent to her husband in 1885, two years’ after their marriage. The bond, which was mislaid in 1870, was recently discovered. , Since the death of Napoleon 111., in 1873, the ex-Empress Eugenie, who is in her 81st year, has lived in close retirement, and in comparatively poor circumstances, in England, her present residence being at Farnbofough, in Hampshire. As one writer expressed it, she is ‘ ‘ an aged woman with little left to her in this world but the remembrance of former power and the good feeling of old time friends.” So there seems small chance of the holder of the bond mentioned above recovering such a large sum from Napoleon’s widow.
