FOXTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

SPECIAL MEETING.

A special meeting of the local Borough Council was held last night. Present—His Worship the Mayor (B. G. Gower, Esq.), and Crs Coley, Hickson, Moore, Stiles, Frankland, and Baker. • The meeting was called with a view of discussing the advisability of improving and forming new footpaths, dealing with Francis St. to be taken over by the Council from Mr Brewer, and general.

Cr Stiles moved and Cr Baker seconded, That tenders be called for kerbing with concrete 40. or more chains at per chain, in MainSt., measurement'l2 x 4. Tenders to be in by 6th May,—Carried. Proposed by Cr Hickson, seconded by Cr Frankland, That the footpaths be formed from Avenue to Town Hall, along Union St. (north side up to Nye St.); also Duncan, Park and Cook Sts., the footpath in Park St. being on the School side and running to Robin, son St. and Avenue to Futter St —Carried.

Councillors were unanimous in the opinion that footpaths in certain quarters were badly needed, and a lengthy discussion followed. Correspondence was read from T. W. Butcher stating that the agreement with the Council to light the Borough with coal gas was ratified by the Council on April Bth, and he 'would not recognise any date previous to that, —Councillors, while not desiring to obstruct Mr Butcher, pointed out that it was Mr Butcher and not the Council who had been the cause of delay. After a desultory discussion,' Cr Baker moved and Cr Stiles seconded, That the concession to Mr T. W. Butcher in reference to date be granted, and that the agreement date from April Bth, 1907, and be signed and sealed. —Carried.

It wias proposed, on the motion of Gr Baker, seconded by Cr Stiles, That the Council inspect Brewejr St.' this morning with a view of passing it prior to taking it over.
