MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the above was held on Wednesday. Present —Crs. G. J. Wilson (chairman), McKenzie, Masters, Hammond, Kendall, Dalton. An apology was received from Cr Barber.

The following letters were re> ceived:—

From Treasury, enclosing ,£4B

is lod, refund lor charges of tramway, also stating that for purchase of land and construction of road along Shannon Ferry and for two bridges on FeildingAwahuri road, had been placed in the bank to the credit of the County. From Railway Department, stating that the firm who had secured the right to cut flax in the County was trespassing on the railway land, and the Department asked for particulars of the extent of the right. From the secretary of the Palmerston North Charitable Aid Board, stating that the County’s liabilities to the Board for the current year was ,£347 5s 2d, and the amount for the Infectious Diseases Hospital was £l2 9s, From Cr. Kendall, stating he had consulted with Mr J. Thompson, owner of the property on Oroua Downs, through which the drains from the creamery ran, and Mr Thompson had agreed to allow the drains to be cleaned out, but he would not allow the washings from the creamery to flow into the drain. Mr Kendall suggested the only way out of the difficulty was for the creamery to be shifted to a more suitable site.

From Mrs E. W. Collie, Motoua, asking for something to be done on the Motoua road, which would be in a very bad state in the winter, unless it was attended to.

From D. Piggott, Motoua, calling attention to the state of the Shannon Ferry punt. From D. Gray, Glen Oroua, complaining that new rule regarding payment for goods carted by the tram was too drastic. He could not wait on the tramline with money in his hands to pay for goods. He could get his goods almost as cheaply fromHimatangi, but he supported the tram because it was a ratepayers’ concern. From several business firms, asking for ledger accounts to be made for them in connection with tram traffic. Also from a tramway employee asking for an increase in wages from 7s to 8s per day. From Mr. J. Mclntyre, driver on tram engine, asking for an increase of wages from 9s. ard 10s per day. The Granary manager reported as follows;—To the year ending 31st March, 1907, the receipts were 12s 4d, and expenditure £ q iis id, leaving a credit balance of £2O os xod. The following motion was carried: —‘ ‘ That A. K. Drew be appointed clerk, treasurer, and rate collector for the County, as from Ist April, 1907 ; also that Mr Drew be appointed Tramway Manager, as from same date.”

Bank Balance —General account, dr., ,£722 os 1 id; Loan account, cr., 5s rod. Riding Accounts.—Amounts available for expenditure to 31st March, .1907: —Waitohi Riding, 13s 7d. Amounts over expended. —Sandon. ns : Mt. Stewart, £93 13s sd; Rongotea, £94. xos rod; Kawakawa, .£4Bl 15s 8d; Awahou, 5s rod; Whirokino Division, £ 63 2s rod. The Overseer reported among Other matters that the flax carts, carting flax along Lee’s Line, have shown up the weak places along this road, which will require about 50 yards of metal to patch it up, between Mr Burrell’s gate and and Rakihou road: —Awahou Riding. —The late flood in the Manawatu river did considerable damage to the Foxton-Shannon road, more especially along the newly-formed portion which the contractor had completed. I arranged with the contractor and Councillor Barber's behalf to repair the damage for the sum of £l2 xos. I think it would be advisable to fascine the side of the road with bundles of scrub at Burr’s road ; this would prevent the flood from scouring the road. The work done in this Riding by surface men during the month consists chiefly of spreading metal and breaking stones. A small culvert has been put across the Beach road, and the road put in order.
