BOROUGH COUNCIL.
Ordinary Meeting. The ordinary meeting of the Council wa,s held last night.. Present ; His Worship the Mayor (B. G, Gower esq.,) and Crs O. Austin, Moore, Baker, Hickson, Shadbolt and Frankland. .. A special meeting was held to confirm special orders for Shannon bridge loan. The minutes of the previous ordinary and special meetings were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence was read as follows : From T. W. Butcher, . stating that contract re erection of gas works would be completed, and notifying that his representative would be in Foxton to-day. • From the Secretary of the Borough Band, asking the Council’s assistance to make the Bazaar a success.
From the Railway Department, notifying that trucks for the conveyance of limestone would be available at an early date. From the District Hospital and Chat itable Aid Board, apportioning the Council’s contribution for maintenance of Infectious Diseases Hospital for current year at £2 9s lod, and 4s 3d tor hospital maintenance.
From J. Thomas, ■ asking for information in reference to lighting and nightsoil contract with a view of tendering for same. , From Treasury notifying that £l2 los gd had been remitted to credit of Library, account as Governrnent subsidy.. From Lands and Survey Dept> asking for surveyor’s plan pjf Grey Street closing. From W. G. Aspinall, solicitor, Temuka, enclosing copy of agreement entered into between Temuka Borough Council , and T. W Butcher re lighting Temuka Borough with. gas. The agreer ment was entered into between Mr Butcher and the Borough' arid-the former then transferred his rights to a company. The solicitor requested payment of one guinea for same.
From Manawatu County Council stating that it had no funds available at present for expenditure on the Beach Road.
From District Hospital and Charitable Aid Board asking for net rateable capital value q£ Foxr ton.
Proposed by Cr Baker, sconded by Cr Frankland, That the Minister of Agriculture be requested to have the Orchard and Garden Pest Act put more fully into effect within and around the borough.— Carried.
Cr Baker proposed, and Cr Austin seconded, That the Justice, Departinent be asked to connect the local Court office with the telephone exchange.—Carried. Cr Baker proposed and Cr Austin seconded, That the Foxton Borough Brass Band be granted a donation of five guineas towards their funds. —Carried. Cr Shadbolt dissented bn the ground that it should be ten guineas. Proposed by Cr Moore, and seconded by Cr Frankland, That the Council consent to the right-of-way reserved by Mrs Thynne’s leases.—Carried.
Proposed by Cr Frankland, seconded by Cr Baker, That the repairing of footpaths (as per estimate provided by the overseer) be undertaken forthwith, so far as the 40 chains in Main St., and the first eight chains in Avenue-road are concerned, and that a special meeting be held next Monday to decide on the method of carrying out the work.—Carried,
Proposed by the Mayor and. seconded by Cr Frankland, That the next monthly meeting of the Council be held on May 6th, and, that a week be added to the Town Clerk’s annual holiday, as he only had a week last year.:—Carried. Accounts amounting to 6s 2d were passed for payment.
Cr Moore drew the attention of the Council tQ several large ruts which required to be filled in on the Avenue Road.
Four applications were received for the position of poundkeeper and right of lease of pound cottage, and that of Mr G. Tozer was accepted. His appointment to date from the 27 th inst.
The overseer’s and treasurer’s annual reports were read and adopted, and the Council rose at 10.40 p.m,
