The Manawatu Herald. TUESDAY, APRIL 2, 1907. FLOOD WATERS.
The flood water is still lying between the Whirokino bridge and the borough boundary along the Foxton-Levin road, and the stench that is created by the stirring up of the water is worse than the smell from a fellmongery. One passenger on the mail coach yesterday remarked as the horses splashed into the ink-coloured water that “it was not all violets!’’ Our representative agreed with him. Year after year goes on and the water after a flood is allowed to remain, being drained off at the rate of from one to three inches per day. The road in the flooded area is controlled by the Manawatu County Council. Property owners whose land adjoins the road could form themselves into a Drainage Board, when the drainage of these lands could be dealt with in a comprehensive manner. Failing which the County Council has the power to form such a controlling body. It is apparent that something should be done to deal with the flood water in the locality. The land is under flax - cultivation. The strench is due to decaying vegetable matter.
