COFFINS 200 YEARS BURIED.

In the tunnelling operations connected with the continuation of the Berlin underground railway a long-disused churchyard has been discovered.

It is situated under the Spittelmarket, now the centre of the business part of the city, and judging by the number of coffins found, it must have been of large dimensions. The remains of between 250 and 300 bodies have been brought to light, most of which are dried up or petrified. - Although the bodies must have lain underground for upwards of two hundred years, the hair in most cases is perfectly preserved, while the texture of the wrappings is easily distinguished. In some few cases the features are still clear, and the bodies- of a young girl and a child, three years old, are so well preserved that they might have been identified. The coffins had stood the pressure of the earth on them very well, but they fell to pieces oh coming into contact with the air. The human remains were carefully collected and removed to other cemeteries tor re-burial.
