A PECULIAR APPOINTMENT.
Mr Lease writes us as follows: “Sir, :—ln January last tenders were called by the Borough Council for public street lighting. I applied, and ray tender was ,£SO per annum. The tender of the only other applicant for the position at per annum, £lO higher, was accepted ! As I hold excellent credentials from other local bodies and was perfectly competent to do the work and do it well, why was my tender not accepted by the Council ? I notice fnrther that the work is being done most unsatisfactorily by a ladj I was informed that the position was cut and dried before hand. Has the Council power to squander the public money in such a manner and can a reason be given why ray tender was not accepted ?” It is rather late now for Mr Leask to enter a protest. Yet on the face of things in does appear to us that Mr Lask has been treated unjustly and that £lO of the people’s money has been thrown away. We should be wanting in our duty to the public if we did not let daylight into this matter. It appears to us that Mr Leask is as capable to fill the
position as any one and to do the work much better for £lO per year less than is now paid. Why, we ask, was he not appointed ?
