A LETTER FROM 'FRISCO.
An interesting story about the San Francisco mail steamer Sonoma’s stranded crew was told to a reporter by Mr O. Baker, American consul at Sydney. “ The discipline in these boats has been extremely bad for two years now,” he said. ” The men want to be treated as saloon passengers. The firemen have a saying in the stokehole, ‘ No ice cream—no steam,’ and they stuck to their threat. They were actually humoured, the ice-cream left from the saloon tables being sent below to them. They asked for cake, and got it; fancy that ! Only recently they heard that string beans were served for dinner in the saloon, and because none were sent below to them, they eased up, till the beans were forthcoming. They want to be fed as good as the saloon passengers, or there is trouble. Now, these are the kind of men we have to deal with.”
