BOROUGH COUNCIL.
Special Meeting.
A special meeting of the Council was held in the Council Chambers last night. Present: His Worship the Mayor (B. G. Gower, esq.,) and Crs Coley, Shadbolt, Moore, Stiles, Baker and Frankland.
The Mayor and Crs Baker and Moore were appointed to sign the District Electors List. A number of names were added to the list and the Clerk stated that those possessing the necessaryqualifications could get their names added to within a fortnight of the municipal election. Four applications were received for the position ot Inspector of Nuisances and Building Inspector, and after a general discussion the application of Mr Andrew Jonson, on the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr Coley, was accepted unanimously.
A lengthy report was read from the Borough solicitor in reference to the destruction of the pound book in the fire at the pound cottage. The conduct of the poundkeeper in reference to pound matters was very severely commented on by Councillors. Finally, Cr Baker moved and Cr Coley seconded, That C. Spiers be advised that owing to the unsatisfactory way he has carried out his duties as poundkeeper that the Council has decided to dispense with his services after April 27th, and further, that the Town Clerk advertise tor tresh applications to be in by next monthly meeting.—Carried unanimously. The Council then went into committee.
After resuming, the Mayor moved, Cr .Baker seconded, That the application of the N, Z. Shipping Co. for permission to put an overhead trolly system be granted, subject to no interference with traffic carried. After discussion the clerk was instructed to take the necessary steps to strike a sanitary rate over the nightsoil area. Cr Stiles brought up the laxity of Mr Butcher, who had got the contract to light the town, and he moved that Mr T. W. Butcher be written to stating that the Council require a definite answer together with deposit re the proposed gasworks, and if no completion of contract reaches the Council by the Bth April 1907 the Council’s offer will be refused. Seconded by Cr Baker and carried unanimuslv. The Borough Overseer was instructed to supply estimates for tarring footpaths where necessary by next monthly meeting.
