At last night’s Borough Council meeting it was decided to dispense with the services of the present poundkeeper and call applications for the position, which appear in this issue- It was also decided to have the pound cottage renovated and painted. Next Sunday being Easter Day. “All Saints” Church will be specially decorated. The services will be found in the advertisement column. Arrangements have been made with regard to the services so as to give everyone an opportunity of attending at least one of them. The services throughout the day will be conducted by the Vicar.

The pound book, which had been partially burnt at the recent incipient fire at the pound cottage, was the cause of close inspection and much speculation at last night’s Borough Council meeting. After the solicitor’s report upon the recent enquiry had been submitted, the book was called for and duly produced by the Clerk, Councillors gathered round the book, and many and vague were the arguments put forth as to how the book caught alight. Cr Shadbolt was positive that the book was standing on its end when it caught alight, others did not agree. Then Councillors fell to wondering how the leaves, covering the period during which the present poundkeeper had been in charge, came to be torn out. The whole thing was declared a mystery, and will remain so until the Recording Angel explains it. But, then, suppose some of those interested at that time are not present ?

The Borougn Counci calls tenders for the position of a poundkeeper. The many [friends of Mrs Geo. Barber will regret to hear that she is at present in a very precarious state of health.

The steamer lonic, which sails for Eondou to-day, is carrying a record total of 308 passengers from New Zealand. Parishioners of All Saints’ Parish are reminded by the Church wardens that offertories on Easter Day are to be handed over to the Vicar.

At last nights Boroug’h Council meeting the Mayor explained that a certain area was marked off in one place by an “ imaginary line, ” to which a councillor naively replied ‘ 1 that there was no imaginary line there.”

Mr Rae-Howard has a shipment ofj choice peaches coming to hand to-day from the orchards at Riwaka, Nelson, which will be sold at 6s per case, cash. Order at once to save disappointment. “ From what 1 can see,” remarked Cr Baker at last night’s Council meeting, when discussing the merits of two applicants whose chances were equal for the position of Inspector of Nuisances, etc. “You can put them on a see-saw.” We don’t know whether the Councillor desired that the two applicants should decide the matter in this way. It would have proved a very interesting event, say, with Cr Coley as ‘ ‘ centre man. ’ ’ We clip the following from the Temuka Deader: — “Proposals have been made to the Foxtou, Borough Council to light the borough with coal gas, and Temuka, having been put forward as a borough that was lit with one of the most up-to-date plants, the Foxton Borough Council sent one of their number, Councillor George Coley, ‘ to Temuka to visit the works, make inquiries, see the light that is supplied, and gain all the information he could on the subject. Councillor Coley, who was accompanied by a friend, Mr Thos Dee, arrived on Friday afternoon. with a letter of introduction to the Town Clerk and the manager of the Gas Works, and lost no time in getting to work. The Town Clerk suppled him with what information he could, and the manager of the Gas Works took him all over the works, and gave him a great deal of practical information. In the evening he was able to see the town lit up with the incandescent gas, and expressed himself well pleased with what he had heard and seen and the way the gas works were managed. He thought, however, more street lights would be wanted in Foxton, but this is merely a matter of £ s. d. On Saturday morning Constable Gillespie, an old friend of the visitors, took them for a drive around the district. They left by the 2 o’clock express train for Christchurch.
