The Manawatu Herald. SATURDAY, MARCH 23, 1907. FORTUNE TELLING.
Fortune Telling at parties appears to be in great vogue througlxout the colony. The hostess invites a “pro” to entertain her friends. It is a novel kind of amusement that is when the ‘ ‘ teller ’ ’ is possessed of an extensive imagination. Some of these “ladies” profess to be very wise and gifted with prophecy, like the Maori Tohunga. To the enlightened their “ jabber ” is treated as so much “ flapdoodle” and is quickly banished from the mind. Others, again, drink in every word that falls from the lips of the jabbering, solemn-faced “prophetess.” Tlxe foolish girl, who has just entered on the ‘ ‘ calflove” period, listens attentively, and her eyes start forward as the ‘ ‘ palmist ’ ’ tells of a blue-eyed young man Jover; warns her to beware of a dark-eyed rival who professes friendship ; long trips or short trips across the sea; a widow with three children ; second marriage with a wealthy individual; and so on ad lib. Now, the susceptible and foolish girl’s mind is filled with this “trash,” and which creates an evil influence over her, and in some cases has ended disastrously. Exactly the same thing happens to the poor benighted Maori who consults |Jie Tohunga. Not only do girls in the “calf-love” stage consult these “parasites.” We know of women moving in high social life in towns who are continually and surreptitiously consulting these “ladies.” and one case comes to our mind where a woman who had previously lived happily with her husband, “ cut the painter” and broke up the home. ’Tis pitiful to think that in these enlightened times women are to be found with mental faculties so stunted. Let them remember that they are the architects of their own lives and fortunes, endowed by the . Creator with brains above the monkey
tribe, to do their very best in whatever station they move and whatever the circumstances, and a sound reliance upon an overruling Providence.
