BOROUGH COUNCIL MATTERS.
The burgesses will be called upon next mpnth to elect a Mayor and Counciilors for the ensuing term. Many important matters will have to be decided by the new Council, therefore it behoves citizens to return men with ability and who are prepared to sacrifice a portion of their time for the good of the town and its people. Foxton is now arising to newness of life. During the past twelve months new industries have arisen, the port has grown in importance, population has increased, buildings have sprung up in all directions, and property has doubled in value. The old order of things has changed, and greater responsibilities will be cast upon the councillors if the Borough is to keep in touch with the onward march of progress. The Council should reflect the intelligence of the people. If the burgesses are apathetic and indifferent, then it follows that councillors are indifferent, and the responsibility of 1 ‘ running the town ’ ’ falls upon the clerk. Every councillor should seek office with a view of pushing the town forward, be acquainted with municipal law, and have a knowledge of the rules of debate. Any householder paying not less than £lO per year in rent and who has been three months a resident of the Borough can stand for the office of Councillor or Mayor, The Clerk will enter on the district electors’ list the name of every person possessing the necessary qualification. The Council will hold a sitting the fourth Wednesday in March to amend the roll by adding or erasing names, etc. The roll will be closed at 5 o’clock in the afternoon of the fourteenth day preceding the day appointed for election. The election of Mayor and Councillors takes place on the last Wednesday in April.
