MAIL CONTRACTS.
The Canada-New Zealand Service.
Melbourne, March 9,
It is reported that the syndicate which holds the Australian mail contract will probably tender for a line of fast mail steamers between Canada and Australia, via New Zealand, for which they have heard tenders are likely to be invited by the Canadian, the Commonwealth, and the New Zealand Governments.
The representatives of the syndicate have obtained promises, aggregating several hundred thousand pounds, from prominent Victorian investors, to buy debentures.
