THE NIGHT SOIL CONTRACTOR.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—The present state of affairs between the Council and the contractor seems to me to be a very dubious change for the better, of affairs—l have for some time past been paying at the rate of is per month. Consequently I was somewhat astonished at receiving from the night soil gent an account tor four shillings, being a double at the rate of two shillings. This is carrying into very strong effect the old fable of “King log and king stork.” I hear from outsiders that the new broom is anxious to make hay while the sun shines, i.e., whilst this present agreement lasts. Where others paid the usual one shilling per mouth, it is now one shilling and sixpence, and in several cases the extra remove is not necessary. I trust the Council will see their way in recommending the contractor not to pursue the course he is taking. If it were for the benefit of the public health, more praise to him say 1.. But the benefit to him is his pocket and it falls hard on those who can ill afford this extra charge. Thanking you in anticipation.—Yours etc., W. Knapp.
