WRECK OF THE CARNARVON CASTLE.
Terrible Experience Of Survivors. PKRTii, February 26. Captain Jones of the Carnarvon Castle, is very weak. The survivors of his boat had a terrible time after parting with the mate’s boat. Weak boys were raving and strong men praying alternately. The Captain put the crew on quarter rations. The biscuits became saturated with salt water and the eating of them sat,up a fearful craving for salt water. On February 13th the ship’s carpenter ate ravenously despite orders to the contrary. Soon after he lay down quietly and seemed to go to sleep, but he had died. On February 19th water gave out and the provisions were finished the following night. The same night a steamer passed them without observing their slow fires. On February 22nd they saw Cape Naturaliste light. There was great rejoicing among the crew at the sight, and but for the Captain’s discipline most of the crew would have gone mad.
