SLAUGHTERMEN'S DEMANDS

Gisborne, March 1. A meeting of slaughtermen last night decided to ask Mr Townley, Mayor of Gisborne, to act as mediator in the dispute. The position at both works is unchanged. The men at Nelson Bros.’ works are again killing one lamb per hour. Dunedin, March 1. The men are still out at Burdside and are awaiting developments in the North. Christchurch, March x. There is no change in the position of the strike to-day. The works are dealing with potters and preservers by means of casual labour. Twenty men have been put on the killing board. The Belfast companies are still waiting tor the Union to approach them. The men, on the other hand, are in no trepidation, and apparently take a complaisant view of the position. All have been served with citations to appear before the Arbitration Court on Tuesday. Invercargill, March 1.

The strike situation altered today, it being practically decided that the men should start at Mataura to slaughter the sheep on the ground at 255, and Ocean Beach will probably do likewise. The men agreed to slaughter for a big Home buyer at 25s at Wallacetown, but so far the company has not given the use of their works. All but nine of the strikers are Southlanders.
