EXHIBITION BABY SHOW.

Speaking of the above show held last week at the Exhibition, Christchurch “ Truth ” says : —“ Seeing that 21,570 people attended the Exhibition yesterday we may assume that the great baby show was a financial success and as this is the only consideration that appeals to Mr Munro, no doubt the Panjandrum is happy. But it is time somebody put in a plea for the un-

fortunate victim, the baby, itself. It is all very well for the fond mother to have a good opinion of her offspring, and a desire to match it against the progeny of her neighbour, but in this paper’s opinion it is a phase of the sporting instinct that should be discouraged till some proper means are devised for holding the parade under hygienic and comfortable conditions. What has the unfortunate mite done that it should be compelled to fill its little lungs for hours with the stifling atmosphere of the main corodor, and the Commissioner’s room, where the air last week was thick enough to boil for soup ? Probably few of the mothers guessed what they were in for when they decided to compete, and after the jostling they got and the critical and often rude scrutiny of.the morbidly curious crowd they will take a lot of persuading to undergo the ordeal again.”
