TENNIS.

On Saturday last the combined Ohakea and Taonui met the local players at Foxton, and were victorious by twelve games to seven or 660 points to 583. Foxton was unfortunate in having four of its leading male players away, and consequently, was compelled to draw on its junior players. There is no doubt if the local club had been able to place its best team in the field that Foxton would have been the victors. The surprise packet of the day was Miss Collins beating Miss S. Bailey in the ladies’ single- The former played the best game of her life, and with constant practice will yet make her name at tennis. She was also successful, with the aid of Miss Wan--klyn, in pulling, off the ladies’ double. The best games of the day, from a spectator’s point of view, were the men’s doubles. Marshall and Clemett, although at one stage of the game were behind, still, with a splendid effort and beautiful placing, won the game by five points. In the second men’s doubles Morgan, who is one of the juniors, played with Macdonald but both were beaten by seven ; in this game the placing was well timed, and Macdonald’s net play a treat to watch. Morgan was successful in getting in some swift serves, but lacked any sting in driving. The third men’s double fell to Foxton ; in this game Ross and Fraser (two juniors) won a game which seemed at one stage hopeless. A. Bailey, who beat Macdonald in the men’s single, played a lovely game, and after driving well generally, finished up by placing beautifully. At one stage of the Clemett-Innes single the former player won every ball off his serve. In the combined doubles Marshall and Miss Wanklyn had their opponents in trouble from the commencement. At the present time these two players combine better than any other two. Most of the visiting men had the local players in trouble with their cut serve, and this is one branch of the game Foxton should study more. The visitors were entertained at luncheon by the Foxton players at the Post Office Hotel, and during the afternoon the ladies dispensed afternoon tea. The visitors, after having spent a - very pleasant day, left on the return journey at 6 p.m. All the arrangements of the match were successfully carried out by the Secretary of the Club (Mr Macdonald), who got the games off rapidly without any waits. The following are the detailed scores, Ohakca-Taonui being mentioned first in each case :
