The Woodvllle Meeting. *
[by our special.]
Woodville Club were unfortunate in experiencing wretched weather for their recent meeting. Many of the events were run in blinding sheets of rain which made the track unusually heavy and caused owners to use their scratching pen freely. The attendance was also marred and the tote figures showed a falling off. Secretary Gothard and officials worked untiringly and energetically to the satisfaction of all.
Montigo proved that he was a useful sort by annexing the Cup with a good late run similar to his Foxton Cup performance. Still, I think probable will defeat him next time they meet.
Mahoe and Sandix are useful sorts and should be eagerly watched by punters when they get out in better company. Both these won their races from almost impossible positions, neither faring too well at the start. , The Hurdle Race the first day was nothing short of a fiasco, as Fretwork went on his own and finished some seconds in front of the second horse-
Lord Soult found the weight too much to concede Chicane in the Shorts. The latter, who should go on winning, won easily. Mr Symons’ pony was giving The Possible representative 2st, gibs. After being amongst the first division at five furlongs in the Maiden the first day, and with the placed horses out of the way, backers sorted out Toatuhi as a good thing, for the Scurry, and such proped correct, for the Conqueror chestnut took charge early in the race and won comfortably. Alf. Wright had him looking well in condition, and he may win more races. Immediately alter the race he was auctioned and found a Foxton buyer, Mr J. Lambess, at 141 guineas. Toney Messena had a stroke of luck with Waicola, who had to be ridden hard to defeat Chicane on the post by inches. Toney would not start Waitapu in the wet going but W. Carter’s Motoa was going on well when he finished second in the Scurry. This dark Conqueror should win before long. Had Waitapu started he would probably have been a hot favourite as he was the popular pick in all doubles. Lady Nell won the Maiden very easily, but let her connections down badly in the Welter the second day.
I regret to have to record the death of Charley Jenkins’ mother, which occurred at Otaki on Wednesday last. The popular horseman, who fulfilled Woodville engagements, has the sympathy of all.
Judge Hartgill had several close finishes to decide.
