ANCIENT DOCUMENT UNEARTHED.

Our ‘ P.D.’ was instructed this morning to clean out and burn a quantity of paper and other rubbish lying in the old building used for storage purposes at rear of Herard office, and discovered the following document during the progress of making space : CHAP. I. And it came to pass in the reign of Govverius that wise men did assemble to his Council, and they were named as follows :—Bombast! us Coleus, who smote the people with harsh words and continuous grumblings ; Georgius Graylebus, who did resign from the Council after many moons because there was a great drought among the people, and he was called away because his right arm was strong to pull the pulupins ; Youthfulonius Austinus was not learned in the waysofthe Council, and the people were wroth because he dwelt among the flax and heaped up gold to himself and did not give ear unto their wants, and lo ! he was a failure ; Shadboltinus, of the tribe of the Publicanus, did stay much away from the Council of the brethren and no good works are graven on the council tablets to his memory ; Sti-

lebus, he of the slim form and smiling countenance, did sell much fine linen unto the women in those days, and his mouth did give forth many good words for the benefit of the people, and he was held in high esteem by the Methodonians ; Franklandicus. he of much learning and accompanied by an umbrella and many books, did talk of the wise men of the Chamber of Commerce, and of the ancient river which flowed through the land in those days, and his counsel was wise ; Baldicus Hicksonius, with solemn face like unto he who had killed his uncleus, did lift up his voice and cry out, for the roads and footpaths were not good ; Mooribus was of solemn countenance because of much study, and the wroth of Colebus was heavy upon him, but he was a good man ; Bakeribus, rose often and his shrill voice was heard breaking upon the stillness of the chamber and he cried for light unto the peeople because it was not. And after every big moon did the Council meet and listen to the voice of the Clericus, he with the fierce and horn-like points on the upper lip. He spoke of many things to be done, and the Council of the wise men sat long. Now in those days there arose a prophet from among the people, one Acquarius, he of the fearful eyes, and he took counsel with the black cow which did carry the clanking chain. He. arose and smote the air with his whiskers and the’ cow mooed- After partaking himself to the well he cried aloud to the people ! ‘ ‘ The Ancient Council is useless. Bong have we cried j for water and light, but the wise men will not hear our cry. Give unto me the power to jingle gold and you shall thirst no longer and your flocks and herds and thirstymen shall drink in plenty and the light shall shine in your streets —” and the black cow mooed.
