LOCAL STATE SCHOOLATTENDANCE.
We are pleased to state that the attendance at the local school during last week was an improvement on that of the previous weeks of this year. The roll number (285) has now attained a record for Foxton, and is steadily increasing. The average attendance for last week was 242 —there are still 43 irregulars. Now, if the parents of these would have some regard in particular for the interests of their own children and for the town generally, the average would be maintained at over 250, which is the next stage for not only an increase of staff, but also a considerable advance m the school committee’s capitation, and thus the school and its surroundings would be benefited two-fold. The Truant Inspector visited the school last Thursday, and intimated his intention of bringing the attendance up into line with the other schools ot the Wanganui Education District. To effect this he intends to have frequent prosecutions in the Magistrate’s Court. Henceforth the cases are to be dealt with monthly, and if necessity advises, fortnightly, until habitual offenders have learned that children are compelled to regularly attend school by Act of Parliament.
