EXPLOSION AT WOOLWICH.
The explosion at Woolwich was chiefly caused by cordite. It was heard at places 51 miles] distant, but south of the river it was heard only for three miles, owing to the hills intervening. The explosion occurred in the early morning in the laboratory magazine. The workman were then absent.
The gasholder containing 330,000 feet of gas collapsed, the gas taking fire. ,
A dental examination of children in the upper standards of public schools in Wellington reveals an alarming decay m the teeth of the young. Of 1148 children’s mouths examined it was found that 5887 needed treatment —an average ot over 5 per child examined. If the custom of riding astride continues to grow among English women of fashion at its present rapid pace, the chief occupation of the smart Eondon teachers of horsemanship will be gone. Many prominent women of the highest social class, among them the Duchess of Westminster, the Viscountess Castlereagh, and the young daughter of the Duchess ot Sutherland have adopted the cavalier style of horseback riding. One reason of the popularity of the newer fashion is that it curtails the process of learning to ride. The confidence and skill which formerly came only with much experience, are acquired in a few weeks. The increased safety is another favourable argument. Women travellers and explorers nearly always ride astride. The standard objection that women look so ungainly riding in this way is met by the new cut of habit, which presents a neat sportsmanlike appearance.
