An American farmer has invented a machine for planting onions, which is said to closely approach perfection. It is a hand drill which will drop one seed in each drill, any distance apart. It also makes a row, covers the seed the required depth, and rolls the row to make the earth compact. In a test there was not a single seed missed or misplaced in a number ot 200 dropped. The machine will also plant carrot seed, beans, peas and ather seeds. In the course of an address delivered at the annual conference of the South Island National Dairj' Association, held at the Bluff recently, Mr O. Cuddie, the Dairy Commissioner, said the industry was steadily growing. 2000 tons more cheese had been graded during the season ended January last in the corresponding period of the previous year, and there was a prospect of still more next year. It was understood the Government intended to do something with regard to purifying the milk supply, but he was not at liberty to give details. Mary McNanghton, a cook, prevented a burglary at No. 504, Seventh avenue, Brooklyn, New York, recently. The house is the home of the nurses connected with the Seney Hospital, and Mary McNanghton is the cook at the house. She is nearly six feet in height, and weighs igslbs. She occupied a rear room in the nurses’ home. She heard a noise in her room and covered up her head, fearing that a mouse was at large. When she made investigation a little later and found that instead of a mouse a man was going through her bureau, in which she had she was angry. With one bound she jumped from the bed, caught the man, and threw him down. He tried to reach for a knife, but she caught his wrists, and then, with one arm around his neck and holding both of his wrists, she dragged him to the door, only to find that the spring lock on the outside had caught, and she was locked in her own room. Mary did not know what to do, and while she was thinking out a plan she dropped the man on the floor and sat on him. Then she yelled “ Murder !” “Police!” and “Help!” a few times. Her cries brought several women and a policeman, and the man was marched off to the police station. Le Figaro reports that Daniel Osiris, a French contractor, has bequeathed a million to the Pasteur Institute. Dr. Sven Hcdin, the famous explorer, reports the result of his wonderful journey in Asia. He traversed Darkest Tibet diagonally, and dis-. covered many new lakes, rivers, mountain ranges and goldfields. A dental examination of children in the upper standards of public schools in Wellington reveals an alarming decay in the teeth of the young.
