SCHOOL ENTERTAINMENT.

For tbe upper sewing classes at the local public school tbe teachers have inaugurated a novel and instructive idea. At the beginning of the week two monitors are appointed to ask for volunteers ; to draw up a variety programme for the sewing hour ; and to see that the necessary practices are put in on the grand school piano, which was so generously presented by the

public ot this town. bast Friday afternoon being the first sewing day the piano was wheeled into the room, and while the girls were busy with their needles the concert proceeded, and all attentively listened to the solos, and with zest and gusto joined in the choruses. Everybody enjoyed the innovation, the sewing hour slipped by far too quickly, and the average attendance for the week was thereby improved, there being more present (243) on Friday than on any other day of the week. Some excellent talent was unearthed, and the teachers took note of the ability of several of the youthful performers, with a view of producing a children’s concert in the Public Hall at a future date. Miss K. Spelman ably played the accompaniments and the following programme was gone through in the hour:—

Overture, K. Spelman ; song, “ Under the Shade of the old Apple Tree, ”E. Alzdorf; recitation, “ Poppyland Express,” E. King ; song, “ The Little Boy in Blue,” M. King; recitation, ‘‘Far Away,” K. Berthold; song, ‘‘l wouldn’t leave my little Wooden Hut for You,” F. Cook; song, “Sweet bunch of Daisies,” F. Osboldstone ; dialogue, “ Almost a Runnaway,” E. Nye and M. Wanklyn; song, ‘‘Little Girls,” I. Richmond; song, “ The old Rustic Bridge,” M. Wanklyn; dance, “Sailor’s Hornpipe,” R. Crichton ; song, “I love you,” E. Robinson ; piano solo, G. Gavey ; recitation, “ Greedy Puppies.” E. Cooper ; piano solo, “ Holy City,” E. McCarthy: recitation, “Hiding,” I. Small.
