The largest lire that the city has seen lor many years gutted the Harold Colton Company’s ironmongery warehouse, covering an area of 70 by 250 feet. The stock included a consignment ol cartridges, and for • a time, at the height of the lire, the cartridges kept up a hot fusillade on the buildings on the opposite side of the street, rendering the work of the firemen dangerous. Governor He Hunte was early on the scene and placed his horse at the disposal of the firemen and rendered solid assistance in moving the engines and hose. The damage is roughly estimated at /,75,00c. Pellets from exploding cartridges injured two firemen, but not seriously. Previous!}' firemen courageusly removed 150 cases of cartridges and 200 pounds of gunpowder from the building. The books and papers of the firm have been rescued. Falling walls seriously damaged the telephone lines. The firemen, by great efforts, prevented the fire spreading to adjoining premises, though Barker Chambers’ warehouse is considerably scorched and was flooded with water.
Insurances total ,£67,300, including National, New Zealand, ,£6OOO, Standard, New Zealand, ,£SOOO, and South British £4OOO.
Fsre m Loudon* ifONDUN, lieb. 5. A fire in Wood Street, Cheapside, destroyed several warehouses dealing in Manchester goods, silks and woollens. The damage is estimated at £160,000.
