A special meeting of the 1.0. G. T. Try Again Lodge will be held in the Temperance Hall on Thursday evening next at 7.30 o’clock. All members and intending members are requested to be present.. Business of an important nature will be discussed. Wednesday’s “Otago Daily Times ’’ states that the long spell of dry weather has had a very noticeable effect on many rivers and streams. The Pleasant River, for instance, has never been known to be so low in the memory of the oldest inhabitant, and at the present time the course is me:ely marked out by a chain of pools. Trout are reported to be dying in this locality in every direction, and should the gne weather continue it will have a serious effect in this respect. Great grass fires have been raging in Canterbury. 2000 acres of the Cashmere hills were devastated yesterday. Mr G. V. Bogle has been selected by the Professional Board of Victoria College as the Wellington candidate for the Rhodes Scholarship. A fire broke out in Messrs Sargood, Son and Evven’s stall at the exhibition yesterday. The outbreak was caused by the fusing of two electric wires. Very little damage was done.
