VALEDICTORY.

A pleasant little function was carried out in a very pleasing fashion, yesterday afternoon, at Mr M. Perreau’s rooms. The occasion was the presentation to Mr C. F. England, late manager of the local branch of the Bank of New Zealand, of a handsome marble clock subscribed for at the time of his retirement from the service of his many clients, admirers and well-wishers in and around Foxton. Of these there was a representative gathering yesterday. In the unavoidable absence ot Mr F. W. Frankland, the chair was occupied by Mr W. S. Stewart, who made the formal presentation, referring in his usual happy manner to the importance of the position of a bank manager in a country town, requiring as it does, so much tact, judgment, knowledge of the world and business capacity, as well as consideration, firmness and forbearance. How admirably Mr England had fulfilled these requirements during his residence in Foxton as manager of the local bank this little souvenir, however slight and inadequate, was a tangible and convincing proof. Mr England replied in a feeling and felicitous speech, accepting the gift as a memento of happy days, congenial work, friends he had made in the Manawatn. Eulogistic speeches were then made by Messrs P. Hennessy, M. H. Walker, L. Wilson, and C. L Barnard, dwelling on Mr England’s many public and private characteristic merits and wishing him and Mrs England long life, happiness, and prosperity in their new home. The ceremony ended by the singing of the national social anthem, “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow!’’ and a vote of thanks to Host Perreau for his excellent catering.
