It is a curious fact that the secretary of the English Ecclesiastical Commissioners, who have the control of the landed properties of the E'mglish Church, or a very large part of them, at all events, is personally a dissenter. But so little has been allowed his personal opinions to influence his official conduct that the Archbishop of Canterbury lately gave a dinner in his honour, and the Bishop of Birmingham, in apologising for his unavoidable absence, wrote that he knew of no man not belonging to the Church of England who had done so much for the Church as the guest of the evening. A costermonger who was charged at the Tower Bridge Police Court with obstruction, opened the proceeding with the remark : “ It’s six to four on the constable. I will admit it at the start.” " You will be convicted of gambling if you go on like that,” said the magistrate. ” It’s odds on your acting on (heconstable’s evidence,” said the costermongei, am] when he heard his sentence of five shillings or five days, added ; ” I didn’t reckon on anything else —live days’ rest !”
