WATER AND DRAINAGE.
We are informed that another gas company is prepared to instal a plant at Foxton and will submit proposals at the next ordinary meeting of the Council. We are not in favour of allowing private companies to control gas works, etc., but under present circumstances we think it would be wise for tne Council to allow private enterprise to deal with this question provided the ratepayers have the right to acquire the works at a subsequent period at a fair valuation. The Council will have its hands full for some time to come in dealing with the much delayed question of a water and drainage scheme. We must confess that the present Council has not displayed that enthusiasm on this vital question which it should do. Ratepayers return men to the Council to take such measures as will safeguard the health of the people. A man who is solely wrapped up in his own private affairs cannot be expected to do his duty by the burgesses. Such persons are not a success in public life. We want more enthusiasm infused into our civic life. The progress the borough is making demands it. Water supply and drainage is needed. The Council has ample evidence of the fact. Will Councillors continue this criminal neglect or grapple the question in a businesslike manner and submit a comprehensive scheme to the ratepayers and earn their lasting gratitude ? Time will tell.
