The English cricket match at Palmerston and the fact that there was a heavy racing calendar at Christmas time considerably militated against the attendance at this year’s meeting as compared with the 1906 record. Nevertheless, betting was fairly brisk, the sum of Li2,794 going through the machine lor the two days, -as against Li6,sß7 last year, ;;*The meeting was conspicuous for some good finishes, for the successes which attended Toney Messina’s charges on the second day, and for the brilliant dash displayed by Montigo, who won the big race each day. The starting at times was perfect, at other times erratic, the judging in accord with all, and the general arrangements. Secretary Keith was as usual energetic and indefatigable in the execution of his duties, for which he received well-earned comments. He was assisted by a hard-working committee. Although a fall was recorded in the Trial Hurdles, there were no serious accident to mar the pleasure of the outing. Langley Bros provided luncheon in their best style, while the Foxton Borough Band discoursed a lively programme of music. Mr Devine, of Palmerston North, attended to the wants of those who required liquid refreshments, and last but not least, Caretaker Messina had the course looking in first-class order. Punters generally managed to pick winners especially on the second day when several popular picks prevailed. Everything considered the meeting must be counted a successful one.
