The Macmahon Dramatic Company played to two bumper houses in the Public Hall on on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. Although it is an unusual occurrence for a large metropoliton company to visit a township like Foxton, the management expressed themselves as fairly well satisfied with the public patronage. The hall, however, was too inadequate to allow the whole of the scenery to be erected, although it was brought here. The pieces staged were “The Executioner’s Daughter” and “The price of Sin.” The leading roles were ably sustained by Miss May Granville, Miss Helen Fergus, Miss May Renno and little Miss L- Sinclair and Messrs Chas. Blake, Alf. Boothman, M. Lynch, E. B. Russell, S. A. Fitzgerald, E.lNable and S. Gibb. Other minor characters were also well sustained. The audience were very appreciative and delighted with both performances.

Several individuals who had been “looking on the wine when it was red ” finished up the day’s outing at the hall last night. To watch their antics and facial expressions was almost as funny as the man before the footlights. One offered a sum of money in grim earnest for a 20 minntes companionship with the villain ; they laughed heartily when tears should have been the order and one emitted a fearful groan which was intended for the villain but which followed a speech by the hero. It was the kind of groan one hears at times on board ship. One of the merry ones, armed with a bottle in his breast pocket, caused annoyance by walking out. Towards the last he attempted to get out, but the fresh air was apparently too much for him, or perhaps he saw two steps—however, he measured his full length on the ground with his feet sticking in the doorway. If these foolish fellows could only see what consummate asses they look while in this condition it would have a very different effect on them in future.

Speaking of gambling, at All Saints Church on Sunday morning, the Rev. H. F.Wilson referred to the legislative action proposed by the Premier in order to check the practice. The character of Sir Joseph Ward, he said, was well enough known. He was no weakminded ranter. The words he had spoken were said deliberately after serious thought. What did it signify when the trusted head of a Government carefully laid out details of the method by which he proposed to deal with a ■ certain habit common amongst the people ? why, it meant this at least—that, whereas the habit had before been looked upon as not inconsistent with respectability, now it was deliberately and publicly branded as a vice from which every self-respect-ing member of society must hold himself aloof. There was no need to state again the shameless selfishness at the bottom of gambling that makes it as a poison to souls and minds. The report of Sir Joseph Ward’s speech sets that out plainly; and people who think, know it for themselves. The speaker conjured those who heard him to avoid the race-course because it exists simply upon gambling, —a thing that even the government of the country condemns in legislation. Oh, the shame of it! that followers of Christ should be found openly engaging in a practice that cannot be thought even respectable and from which the law has promised (as far as ever it is able) shortly to restrain them by the hand of the police.

Sir Joseph Ward is very emphatic about the exclusion of Chinese and other aliens from New Zealand. At Dunedin last recently announced it was his intention to move the following resolution at the Imperial Conference :—That all future treaties with foreign nations the Imperial Government will make such treaties subject to the right of lall its self-governing colonies to pass such laws as they think fit to limit to the fullest degree short of absolute exclusion the immigration into those colonies of aliens.”
