The Manawatu Herald. THURSDAY, JANUARY 17, 1907. A CHURCH QUARREL.
Tremendous astonishment has been caused among the leaders of the Episcopal Church by a bitter personal attack by Mr E. M. Shepard, upon Bishop Potter, the most conspicuous figure of the religious life of America. The quarrel arose out of the case of the Rev. Dr Crapsey, of Rochester, rebuked by the Bishop for heretically interpreting the doctrines of the Episcopal Church. Mr Shepard in defending Dr Crapsey, aims startling charges at the bishop. ‘‘ Dr Crapsey has not,” since he entered the ministry, lived only with the rich. Dr Crapsey is not served to-day by a a butler, a second man, a coachman and a footman. Dr Crapsey is neither occustomed to nor fond of Sybaritic elegance.” This has stung the bishop into retorting that if Mr Shepherd called, his second man would show him the door. The quarrel is expected to result in the foundation of a new sect, with Dr Crapsey at its head.
