“DISGUSTED'S” REPLY.

Sir. —Kindly allow tae a little more space in your valuable pgpet*. in which to reply toGeo. jTyTand “Ratepayer.” The Jjfrmer practically agrees with me in reference to the unsatisfactory state of the nightsoil arrangements and he says “ where the public health is at stake a matter of expense should not be considered.” I claim- that the health of the people is the Council’s first consideration. They are responsible for the bungling that has taken place— they are responsible for employing an officer who inspects back yards and outbuildings with his nostrils stuffed and his optics closed. I never “ abused ” the Town Clerk, I referred to the “ bloated salary ” the Council voted him as being about the only thing they can boast of. He receives a salary which hundreds of competent men would be pleased to have and I presume that he will pay close attention to the , duties ot his office. I maintain his salary is sufficient to retain the undivided attention of a firstclass clerk—a man who is dodging about after this thing and that neglects borough affairs. The Council rose to the occasion and increased the clerk’s salary, let them deal with the question ot sanitation and fire prevention in the same manner. “Ratepayer’s” letter takes up a lot of room and says that two concrete culverts were erected and the public library and reading rootq. These works were of necessity and there is little in that to cock-a-doodle-do about. lam still of opinion that there is much room for improvement on the part of the Council as it is at present constituted. His reference to my being a “ splentic snake in the grass ” I am willing to pass over. I hold the right to criticise undea a non -de plume and I challenge him to disclose his identity and I will do likewise. Thanks in anticipation,—l am etc., Disgusted.
