INDUSTRIAL FIGURES.

According to the 1506 census, there are in the colony 56 freezing works and boiling down works, which employ 3227 men and 33 women, pay in wages £283,900, and which had in 1905 an output of £4,928,545. The wages and output at previous quinquennial periods were: ,£205,000, output £3,834,891 ; 1895, wages ,£180,775, output ,£1,652,275. These works in 1906 employed 1034 hands in Canterbury, 833 hands in Wellington, and 4xl bands in Auckland.

There are in the colony 264 butter and cheese factories (1900, 247 ; i 895. 17°). employing 1484 hands, (1900, 1188; 1895, 576), paying £131,000 in wages, and having in 1905 an output worth .£2,581,639 (1900. ,£1,535,150 ; 1895, ,£501.274). Taranaki pays ,£31,000 in wages, Wellington, £28,906, Auckland ,£26,000, Otago £"24,000In 1905 bacon-curing establishments paid £22,000 in wages, and the output was worth £253,937 against £159,584 in 1900, and £86,022 in 1895. Fish-curing and preserving establishments paid in 1905 wages £6BOO (1900, £7,500), and had an output of £28,109, ( I 9OQ, /£ 2 5>x73). Auckland claimed £14,255 and Wellington £11,954 ot the total output. In 1905 the colony had 72 breweries, against 85 in 1895, but the 72 paid in wages £92,000, against £57,000 in 1895, and the value of the beer was £572,579, against £336,734. Of the output Otago claims £205.000, Canterbury £IIB,OOO, Wellington, £95,000, Auckland £BO,OOO. In 1905 444 sawmills had a wages sheet of £834,000 and an output of £2,128,766, ?s against £513,000, and £1,268,689 for 334 mills in 1900, and £323,223 and £898,807 for 299 mills in 1895. Auckland’s output is £1,078,233. The nearest to that is Wellington’s ;£339,48i. 1nT905 240 flaxmills paid in wages £227,460, and outputted £557,808, against £101,046 and £203,492 tor 101 mills in 1900 and £i7,544 and £32,546 for 52 mills in 1895- In 1905 Wellington had the lion’s share of output, £189,002, Otago £139,009, Auckland £137,426.
