Mr James S.M., inflicted the heavy penalty of with the alternative of two months imprisonment, upon a man convicted of supplying liquor to a prohibited person at Carterton this week. In doing so his Worship said he was determined to prevent this breach of the law, and for that reason had imposed a substantial penalty. It was a great pity that the Incensing Act did not give power to senten tence the supplier of liquor to imprisonment. In many instances the fine imposed was paid by the prohibited person for whom the liquor had been obtained.
