In the course of an interview at Auckland, Mr J. W. Evans, Premier of Tasmania, said: —‘ ‘The industrial life of New Zealand has certainly impressed me very much ; but although there is a large scope in New Zealand for the working man, although his wages are high, and his hours are not excessive, I could not see anywhere that he was financially better off than in Australia or Tasmania. He gets high wages, I know, but he has to pay very dearly for house rent and the necessaries of life. One should ever bear in mind that the value of wages is what they will buy. I should say the cost of living in New Zealand is from 25 to 50 per cent higher than in Australia, and I doubt whether the wages are from 25 to 50 per cent higher. The experience of travellers in New Zealand that I have met coincides with my own that although the wages may be high the cost ot living is in proportion, so that I dohbt whether the workman is much better off after all.” Why spend money at Rotorua and other thermal springs when Rheumo will quickly cure you of rheumatism 1 gout sciatica or lumbago.
