The Manawatu Herald. THURSDAY, JANUARY 10, 1907. THE COLONY’S HONOUR.

A cable from the Old Country tells how a certain brand ot New Zealand meat had been libelled in a Horae paper. That paper said that at a hospital some of this meat had been found unfit for human .consumption. It is just as well the New Zealand Government has at Home loyal devoted men who chase a rumour to its lair and lose no time about it. This “New Zealand meat” was found to be some ot the celebrated Chicago rubbish and the New Zealand article has been found to be above suspicion. It is of the first importance not only that New Zealand should defend her products by every means in her power but that the products should be worthy of defence. As a matter of established fact, the New Zealand goods that leave this country are usually of the highest possible quality, and this of course has led unscrupulous people in England and elsewhere to use our goods as a basis for adulteration, as in the case of the butter frauds. A point worthy of mention is that although most of the the New Zealand products sent abroad are above suspicion, the local market is frequently flooded with New Zealand products that would get this country a deservedly bad name if exported. In fact our inferior stuff is locally consumed. , In relation to the most important product, wool, a great deal of deceit

is practiced this end as buyers often do not see the inside of a bale until it reaches its destination. Flax, sand, grass and other rubbish often gets into bales of wool and it is very necessary that the proper authorities should investigate this matter. There is no question in our mind that leaving shearers to decide whether wool is wet or dry is the reason for so many wool fires on Homeward bound boats. New Zealand has built up her present extraordinary large export trade by reason of the quality of her products, and everyone who has the progress of the country at heart should most zealously guard the colony’s reputation.
