Scarcity of Water. Mastrrton, Jan. 9. The shade temperature at Masterton yesterday reached 89 degrees exceeding all previous records. The water supply of the suburb of Eansdowne has completely given out, and residents are paying high prices for cartage from the town supply and adjacent creeks. Christchurch, Jan. 9. The long continued drought and heat has dried up immense stretches of grass land in all parts ot Canterbury, and great danger of fire is the result. From all parts come reports of grass fires, some being caused by careless campers, and others by sparks from railway engines. At Glenmark 4000 acres of grass were burned, and in other parts several thousand acres were destroyed. Wellington, To-day. The temperature in the shade yesterday in Wellington reached Sodeg., which is a record for the summer. The temperature in the sun yesterday was 124, Clyde, with 82deg. in the shade, was the hottest place in the colony yesterday. At Foxton and Patea yßdeg. was registered ; Christchurch came next with 74deg., Auckland 73deg., Napier 72deg. Dunedin enjoyed a temperature of 62deg. Christchurch, Jan. 9.
